A lot of money, but some have said that to Facebook, it’s a drop in the ocean. Meta Gets Yet Another GDPR Fine

Meta Fined by GDPR Watchdog - Again Facebook’s owner has been fined €265 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission after a breach resulted in the details of more than 500 million users being published online. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) said Meta had infringed two articles of the EU’s data protection laws after details of Facebook users from around the world were “scraped” from public profiles in 2018 and 2019.

Restored Data Leads to Fine

Restoring a Laptop From a Backup Leads to €7500 Fine The Belgian DPA has issued a €7500 fine against a company for restoring personal data onto a company laptop. The data belonged to a former employee. After their termination from the company the ex-employee wiped his personal data from the computer. He said he had deleted his personal mailbox. The company say he wiped the entire laptop. Either way, the company restored the laptop from a backup, which restored the former employee’s personal data along with everything else.

Google Faces Lawsuit Over Mobile App Data Collection

Data Gathered Even When Users Decline Google records user activity hundreds of thousands of mobile apps even when the users have followed Google’s instructions on how to turn off the monitoring. Google faces a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit has been filed by the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner on behalf a handful of individual consumers. Interestingly, the list of clients includes Facebook Inc and Oracle Corp. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the filing.

It’s Not Just About Digital The ICO fined Doorstep Dispensaree Ltd £275,000 for, among other things, failing to keep sensitive data securely and failing to provide an adequate privacy policy to data subjects. What They Did Wrong Doorstep Dispenaree provide pharmaceutical dispensary services to carehomes. They had c. 500,000 documents containing personally indentifiable data in unlocked containers behind their premsises. They were being investigated by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) regarding alleged unlicensed and unregulated storage of medicines.

ICO Enforcements in the First Half of 2020

ICO Enforcements in the First Six Months of 2020 The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued the following fines in the first half of 2020. Interestingly, two of them were against individuals, not businesses. Two of the fines issued to businesses were for one half of a million pounds. Ouch. Decision Technologies Limited 2nd July Price comparison and technology company fined £90,000 for a contravention of Regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003.
