Working From Home and GDPR

COVID-19 has seen unprecedented numbers of usuall office based workers forced to work from home. Scarily, a report from IT support firm ILUX, in which 2,000 home workers were surveyed, found that one in ten thought they were expected to work in non-GDPR compliant conditions.

James Tilbury, MD at ILUX said: “Whilst, as business owners, we may be busy, stressed and frankly trying to keep our heads above water, it is not a time to be complacent. Asking employees to work from home and then not providing the right computer systems and security measures is a recipe for disaster.

The basic steps are simple:

  • Employees should only use business devices
  • Do not use home computers
  • Mobile phones and tablets should be business-supplied
  • Keep all devices security patched and updated
  • Use a reputable end-point protection suitem including anti-virus, anti-spam and web protection

Of course, these should be bolstered by clear and compliant IT Governance policies and procedures, and staff awareness training in GDPR and cybersecurity.
