Clearview Under Scrutiny

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in the UK have opened a joint investigation into the personal information handling practices of Clearview AI.

The probe will focus on the New York-headquartered company’s use of ‘scraped’ data and biometrics of individuals. Clearview’s technology is used by law enforcement agencies in searching the internet to help identify suspects in serious crime cases.

It came to light earlier this year that Clearview had “scraped” billions of social media photos from the web. It provides its software free of charge to hundreds of law enforcement agencies around the world.

The OAIC and ICO said: “The investigation highlights the importance of enforcement cooperation in protecting the personal information of Australian and UK citizens in a globalised data environment.”

The regulators say they will work, where relevant and appropriate, with other data protection authorities that have raised similar concerns.
